ADC Exam Fees 2026: What the ADC Exam Actually Costs

The published fee schedule covers three stages and stops there. It doesn't mention the attempt most candidates need before their last one, the equipment you'll assemble long before exam day, or the flight to Melbourne you might book more than once. This is the budget nobody hands you at enrolment — built from the ADC's own figures, plus what it actually takes to sit down for them.

The short answer: in 2026 the ADC charges $647 for the initial assessment, $2,122 per written exam attempt and $4,775 per practical exam attempt — $7,544 AUD if you pass both exams on the first try. Add prep courses, equipment, travel and an English test, and a typical budget is about $15,700 AUD if you pass both exams on the first try, or $24,000 AUD with two attempts at each.

ADC exam fees 2026: three stages, three separate bills

Each stage is its own application, its own fee, and — if it doesn't go your way — its own bill again. Nothing carries over, and nothing can be transferred to a later date.

01

Initial assessment

$647 AUD · one-off

A qualifications and, in most cases, work-history check — the gate you pass through before you're eligible to sit anything else. It stays valid for seven years and can be renewed before it expires, from $35. Let it lapse and you start again from scratch, and earlier exam results are void.

02

Written examination

$2,122 AUD · per attempt

Two papers of scenario-based multiple choice, computer-delivered with Pearson VUE at test centres worldwide — you don't need to fly to Australia for this stage. A pass from March 2026 onwards is valid for five years; earlier passes keep the old three-year validity.

03

Practical examination

$4,775 AUD · per attempt

A technical skills day and a clinical skills day, back to back, at the ADC's dedicated centre in Melbourne. The two days are scored separately, and a strong day one can't rescue a weak day two — both must pass in the same sitting.

Requesting a review of a result costs $1,008 AUD at either exam stage; escalating to an independent appeal committee costs $5,305 AUD.

Pass rates have been trending downwards

Written and practical pass rates by ADC financial year, as reported in the Council's own annual reports.

FY2025's written pass rate (12%) is the lowest of the six years shown; the practical exam has drifted downward in four of the last five. For the full candidate numbers behind these rates, see ADC Exam Pass Rates: Part 1 & Part 2 Results, FY2020–FY2025.

The three exam fees are the ADC's official, published rates. Course prices are based on the published prices of five ADC prep academies in September 2026, with US dollar prices converted to AUD. Equipment, travel and the English test are estimates and will vary by supplier, country of origin and how much gear you already own.

Five costs the ADC doesn't invoice you for

~$630–$2,340 AUD

Written exam prep course

Question banks, study guides and structured courses for the scenario-based written exam — from self-paced online access to tutor-led programs.

~$500–$13,400 AUD

Practical exam course

From a single module — communication OSCE, skilled OSCE or technical — to a full onsite package covering all three. Priced per module by most providers, so it scales with how much support you want.

$1,500–$5,000+ AUD

Equipment & practice kit

Loupes, a phantom head, typodont teeth and a portable handpiece unit — what most candidates assemble to rehearse at home. The ADC supplies its own equipment on exam day itself; this is purely for practice.

~$1,000–$2,500 AUD / trip

Travel & accommodation

The practical exam only runs in Melbourne. Every attempt is a flight and several hotel nights, not just an application fee — and the written exam may occasionally require travel outside your home country too.

~$400–$600 AUD

English language test

OET or IELTS, typically sat once as part of the broader registration process rather than the ADC pathway itself — but a real cost on the way to practising, all the same.

The refund window closes six weeks out

✓ 6+ weeks before

50% refund

Withdraw from your practical exam six weeks or more ahead of your allocated date and half the exam fee is returned.

✕ Inside 6 weeks

$0 refund

Withdraw within six weeks — including for visa delays or travel disruption — and the entire fee is forfeited.

Exams can't be rescheduled: withdrawing and reapplying for a later sitting is the only option, and reapplying means paying the full fee again. Refunds are only ever credited back to the card originally used to pay.

The takeaway

Budget for the pathway you'll probably have, not the one you're hoping for.

On the figures above, a candidate who passes everything on the first attempt is still looking at roughly $15,700 AUD once equipment, a written and a practical prep course, one Melbourne trip and an English test are counted. Plan on two attempts at both exams instead — not an unusual outcome at current pass rates — and that figure climbs past $24,000 AUD.

Almost the entire gap between those two numbers is the cost of attempts you didn't need. Every extra practical exam sitting alone adds $4,775 AUD in fees before a single flight or hotel night is booked.

The fastest way to close that gap is to walk into your first attempt already fluent in the stations — which is what deliberate, repeated OSCE practice between coaching sessions is for.

The good news is that the investment pays for itself quickly once you're registered. Dentists in Australia reported an average taxable income of $162,700 AUD in 2023–24, according to the Australian Taxation Office — and that average includes dentists working part-time. Even the two-attempt budget of around $24,000 is less than two months of that income before tax.
